Permissions Issues When Connecting to Shared Windows 2000/XP Resources

When connecting to shared resources on Windows 2000/XP computers problems can occur due to security permissions.  This applies to all Win32 versions (including Win 98 and 2000).

Cause

The user account being used to connect does not exist on the computer sharing the resources and both computers are not members of the same Windows domain (or no domain is present).  Therefore the computer sharing the resources will not be able to authenticate and therefore prompt for a password (which may not be able to be entered using Win 98).

Resolution

To fix this problem simply create a user account on both computers with the same user name and password.
